PCC and Ergative Case: Evidence from Neo-Aramaic

چکیده

Practically in all examples found in the literature, the oblique intervener Y in (1) is an argument marked with dative Case, either a dative indirect object (e.g. Romance) or a dative subject (Icelandic, Basque). Could the intervener be ergative? Under current received accounts of ergativity, this is predicted to be impossible. For simplicity we demonstrate it for H=v: In some theories of ergativity, ergative Case is inherent (Marantz 1991, Woolford 1997, Legate 2002, Aldridge 2004). But since an inherentmarked argument is transparent for structural Case/Agree checking (Rezac 2008), an ergative-marked Y does not count as an intervener in the agree relation between v and X. In other theories of ergativity, ergative Case is structurally assigned by T (Bobaljik 1993, Laka 1993), but then Y is not in the domain of v, and cannot intervene in the relation between v and X. Thus these views of ergativity preclude an ergative intervener.

Ergative case and the transitive subject: a view from Nez Perce

Ergative case, the special case of transitive subjects, raises questions not only for the theory of case but also for theories of subjecthood and transitivity. This paper analyzes the case system of Nez Perce, a ”three-way ergative” language, with an eye towards a formalization of the category of transitive subject. I show that it is object agreement that is determinative of transitivity, and h...

The Ergative System in Balochi from a Typological Perspective

For the Western Iranian languages the transition from the Old Iranian to the Middle-Iranian period is characterised by – among other things – the loss of word-final syllables. This loss had a far-reaching impact on the nominal and verbal systems since it caused the loss of categories which had been expressed by suffixes. The consequences include the emergence of the so-called ergative system. ...

Critique of Luxenberg's Aramaic-Syriac reading of verse 24 of Maryam

Verses 17 to 36 of chapter Maryam state that Hazrat Maryam’s pregnancy made her feel ashamed to face her people. Thus, she took refuge in a distant place to bear the childbirth pain, deliver her child, and avoid facing her people. But God, the almighty, comforted her by giving the good news that the spring will flow at her feet and the palm tree will drop its dates upon her. But apparently the ...

The distribution of unmarked cases in Samoan

Legate (2008) proposes a class of ergative case marking systems, in which sole arguments of intransitives receive nominative case, transitive patients receive accusative case, and transitive agents receive ergative case. The system does not exhibit absolutive as a distinct case. The appearance of a single morphological case on both intransitive sole arguments and transitive patients is due to a...

Nominalization and Predicate-Fronting: Two Sources of Ergativity

In this paper we propose a unified account of ergativity in two unrelated languages with very different systems of marking grammatical relations. Both Chol (Mayan, Mexico) and Mẽbengokre (Jê, Brazil) have what appear to be aspect-based ergative splits. However, while in Mẽbengokre ergativity is found in verb stems which are formally nominal, ergativity in Chol is found in what can be shown to b...
